When we fire up our computer or tablet, some of us unlock it using a password or passcode — a number, word, series of symbols or combination of all three, based on something you hope you’ll always remember off the top of your head.

But these days, some of us unlock devices by using our bodies — our fingerprint, iris or face — a rather new and innovative method called biometric authentication. It uses the unique characteristics of your body or DNA to allow you to access protected machines and data.

Now that biometrics have made it into the security mix and have started to gain popularity, the debate between which is better — and which is safer and more secure — has begun.
